So I got these key necklaces inspired by Andriel and their “yes or no” and how Neil views the keys as a reminder that he now has a “home” with Andrew. Anyway, I love them and figured I would share.

Andrew being gentle with Neil

  • andrew has seen neil flinch multiple times when older men raise their voices and he knows it’s because neil is remembering his father
  • but andrew makes it a point never to raise his voice at neil 
  • if neil ever jars awake from a nightmare Andrew holds him gently and reminds him that he is Neil Josten over and over again
  • and then he runs his fingers through Neil’s curly hair and kisses his forehead
  • When Neil becomes vice captain and some of the newer players aren’t listening to him Andrew will put his hand on Neil’s back as a sign of support 
  • Andrew leaning his forehead against Neil’s after a long day 
  • Andrew being the big spoon and draping his arm over Neil’s hip and drawing small circles on Neil’s body 
  • Andrew bringing Neil coffee during finals week or keeping him company in the library while he studies or even quizzing him on hard concepts 
  • Andrew playing with Neil’s fingers when they lay in bed together 
  • Andrew whispering to Neil in Russian to calm him down 
  • Andrew holding Neil against his body if he ever thinks about Lola and his father

Neil Josten wears a gold band around his left ring finger and is absolutely cheating on his partner.

Before he ever joined the Santa Fe Cougars, Josten was part of a pride campaign for Nike. So was Andrew Minyard. It was a big deal. The interviews around it said every athlete in the campaign was LGBTQ. Josten talked about his husband. Minyard talked about queer foster kids.

That, the Cougars speculate, is where Josten and Minyard reconnected. They went to college together, separated when Minyard moved to Santa Fe and Josten moved to Jersey, saw each other again at this campaign, and then, a year later, were on the same team again.

None of the Cougars have ever met Josten’s husband. Even at team parties, Josten never brings him around. Probably he thinks it would be too risky.

None of them have gotten close enough to Minyard to figure out his relationship status. But, the Cougars collectively believe, Minyard’s relationship status can only possibly make a bad situation worse.

(andrew waking up and going to practice and talking to neil on the phone and going to lunch with the rebels and then his phone goes off and he doesn’t recognise the number-)

(neil dying when he’s out of andrew’s reach and out of his sight, where andrew could do nothing except get the call to say it’s already too late)

(andrew waking up the next morning and being okay until he remembers)

(except he’s lying in bed and his coach calls to ask where the hell he is and he doesn’t have words (or purpose) so he gets out of bed and goes without saying anything)

(and then he’s halfway there when neil calls him worrying because rebels management called him wondering where andrew was, and andrew has to wonder whether he’s gone crazy) (crazier) (but he goes to practice, and then skips lunch with the rebels, and then his phone goes off and he doesn’t recognise the number-)

(and then he’s waking up again and he’s calling neil and he’s alright, he’s fine, even though andrew’s having a truly spectacular mental break and neil promises he’s getting on a plane and coming home, and andrew is almost okay – until the afternoon when andrew’s phone goes off and he doesn’t recognise the number-)

(and then he’s waking up again.)

(three times, three different ways to die. either andrew’s losing it or something is fucking going on here, but either way, somehow, he’s going to find out a way to stop it)

Whenever someone ask Neil why he is dating Andrew these are the sarcastic answers he gives, because he doesn’t need to justify his relationship to anyone:

“I always wanted to be the taller one in a relationship.”

“I’m just holding out for when he dies, because then I will inherit all of his knives.”

“Free and limitless supply of cigarettes.”

“He promised to protect me from my serial killer father and the Yakuza. How could I turn that down?”

“Kevin really pissed me off one day. To get back at him I did the one thing that would drive him absolutely crazy, date Andrew.”

“I’m dating Andrew Minyard?”

“One day he asked me for the date in German. Turns out he was asking for a date. I apparently don’t know German as well as I thought I did, and I’m too petty to admit it.”

“I heard he was pre-med. So I decided that if all this Exy stuff falls through I could at least be the trophy husband of a Doctor. Turns out it’s Aaron who is pre-med.”

“I’m really into Maseratis.”
